In his state-of-the-nation address to the Federal Assembly, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised that within the next few years, Russia will have high-speed Internet access everywhere and start operating fifth-generation mobile communications systems (5G). The first large-scale test zones for 5G technology will begin to appear around the world in 2019, according to experts from Norwegian telecom company Telenor.
Companies that own patents for 5G technology stand to earn billions of dollars in royalties. At the same time, countries with the most advanced 5G networks will gain an edge in technological development with faster data transmission. Currently, the largest U.S. companies developing 5G technology are Verizon Communications and AT&T. As for Russia, it was previously reported that 5G technology in Russia may be put into commercial operation after 2020. By 2024, 5G networks will be deployed in all cities with a population of more than 300,000. Mobile operators MTS, Vimpelcom and Megafon are testing 5G technology in Russia.
Petrosky pointed out that against the backdrop of competition for 5G communication network standards in the world market, Chinese companies have confidently demonstrated their achievements.
