With the coming of 1st May,people all over the wold will celebrate Labor Day,however do you know the history of Labor Day?Do you know why we celebrate Labor Day? And  do you know why it is called Labor Day or why May 1st is Labor Day?

Following I will answer these questions one by one.Labor Day honors the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally celebrated on the first Monday in September. It was founded by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. The date has no particular significance, and McGuire said it was chosen because it falls roughly between the July 4 holiday and Thanksgiving. In 1884, the Knights of Labour passed a resolution making the first Monday in September as Labour Day. It became an annual commemoration that inspired American workers to shut down for the first time. May 1 was chosen as International Workers' Day to commemorate the Chicago Haymarket event of 1886. A general strike for an 8-hour working day took place in the year beginning May 1.
