The Olympics have long been described as a "technology accelerator" that pushes the adoption of the latest
technologies more widely. The Tokyo Olympics is the first Olympic Games to be held since the commercialization of
5G worldwide. 5G has also been widely used in the Olympics, but due to the huge impact of COVID-19, the Role of
the Olympics in promoting the widespread use of 5G in Japan has been limited.
South Korea and the United States officially commercialized 5G in April 2019, while China officially commercialized
5G in late October and early November 2019. In contrast, The commercialization of 5G in Japan was delayed. It
wasn't until late March 2020 that Japan's three major mobile operators, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and SoftBank,
successively launched 5G services. But it seems that Japanese operators don't satisfy their 5G, with
SoftBank CEO Ken Miyauchi saying drily during the q1 2020 earnings call: "It's a modest start."
Due to the impact of the epidemic, network coverage and package charges, 5G development in Japan has not
been fast after commercial use. By the end of March 2021, a year after 5G was commercially available in Japan,
the number of subscribers reached 14.19 million, accounting for about 8% of the total subscribers. By contrast, by
the first anniversary of commercialization, China had more than 160 million 5G terminal connections, and the
number of 5G plan users of China Telecom and China Mobile alone was close to 200 million. In South Korea, the
penetration rate of 5G users is close to 10 percent by the first anniversary of commercialization, which is faster
than Japan.
One of the characteristics of 5G networks is fast speed: data speeds can be up to 100 times faster than the current 4G standard in a given period of time, videos can be downloaded quickly via mobile phones, and it promises to enable autonomous driving and telemedicine. 5G is attracting worldwide attention
